Ok so was talking to someone on youtube who says their problem with Ledger’s Joker was that there were no jokes. Well here’s the list I came up to prove the notion wrong, I miss anything?
Bank scene, miscounting the shots, bus driver, gas bomb in the dude’s mouth.
Mob meeting, magic trick, pissing off Gambol, talking about his suit, “You think you can steal from us and walk away?” “Yeah.”, Giving them a card with no number.
Why so serious monologue, “How about alive”, the story (he actually let’s a laugh out), the bit about tryouts and his operation needing to grow
Batfake video, “Are you the real Batman?” “No” “(sounding sad) Noooo”
Batfake body found, “Will the real Batman please stand up?”
911 call, “Go to (forget address) you’ll find Harvey Dent there.”, Face paint on dead bodies
3 die scene, “We don’t even know where your going just get in the car, open the envelope and go there” get’s in car opens letter “UP”
Party, “Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen we are tonight’s entertainment!”, talking with mouthful, drinking from over exaggerated spill of champagne glass, “Hello Beautiful” slicks back hair like she’ll like him more, (Shout out to fans) “Little fight in ya I like that.” “Then you’re gonna love me”, “Let her go!” “Very poor choice of words”
Funeral, just has to dress up like a cop even though he has a fucked up face and no one notices but hey who could resist?, Officer Rachel Dawes

To know just how alone you really are?” Go Joker apply Freudian logic on your captors!, “He may be in one place or several”, “The good cop bad cop routine?”, “Never start with the head the victim get’s all fuzzy they can’t feel the next…SEE!”, blaming batman for his murders just to piss him off, “even to a guy like me that’s cold” yeah having your methods criticized by your enemy, “I don’t wanna kill you” but you just tried to make up your mind!, Comparing batsy to himself, in a moment of urgency talk philosophically, “Look at you go!”, “Little boogey”, Continuing to get beat up when he can easily stop it but continuing to mock bats, switching addresses
Money meeting, slides down pile, how he goes about burning the money, mocking the Russian’s accent, putting a hit out on Mr. E when he’s doin what Joker wanted, giving the Russian to his beloved dogs
Hospital, why did he have to dress like a nurse?, “Do I really look like a guy with a plan?” na you just stumbled into getting 7 guys to help you rob a bank, “Pfft” as he presses the remote inside the hospital. Reaction to explosion
Ferries, giving the people the detonators to the bombs, dressing up the hostages and giving a shooting gallery, having the dogs, “Oh you made it I’m so thrilled”, “Oh the old familiar places”, “You know we better stop all this fighting otherwise we’ll miss the fire works”, exaggerated grunts while being pulled up, Harvey.

LOL, Syd, every part you said, I thought you were completely correct on. I think that he’s a bit sarcastic, too. Maybe that was why he wasn’t “conventionally” funny.
I think the problem is Joker was a little over most people’s heads. I find the general public to be pretty damn slow on the uptake for the most part, and TDK-Joker’s humor just kinda flew by some. I think this person on YouTube is probably being overly literal, or just trying to cover up the fact that they plain don’t get it.

They were just expecting Jack Nicholson and crazy flamboyant jokes. Ledger’s jokes were only funny to him.
OMG How did I forget “I want my phone call I want it I want my phone call” and how he jingled the keys in front of that Chinese guy. Having been in lockup myself and guessing Joker had too I can say you basically pray for something to happen (like idk an explosion) then for someone to come unlock the door and get you out. Joker, knowing this and also knowing how everyone is afraid of him, seems to relish in the look on ol’ dude’s face.
Here you are wanting to get out…then the only guy with the keys is that nutty clown that’s probably going to take you somewhere and peel your fingernails off. Things that make you go “hmmm…”
Exactly! Just look at Joker’s face in that scene. And the way he shakes the keys! I bet if they extended that it’d go something like “Hi I bet you are just dieing to get out of here. Lets see, which key is it?” starts trying each key one at a time “No, no, not it, no, ding ding ding we have a winner!”
HAHA got another (you know a movie is good when no matter how many times you watch it you always notice something else)if you look at the truck when he’s shooting at the swat van, there’s a carnival on it. “Boys go steal a semi, but make sure it has a carnival painted on it”
I agree with what both of you are saying. The general public has to have Joker smoking a bong or something in order for it to be funny. Or maybe they should smoke whilst watching… or both?

But J is above all of that. I hope it doesn’t make me “general public” if I laughed at the “S/laughter” truck.

Oh that’s awesome that you laughed. And he’s not above or below anything, he’s just there. If he finds it funny he’ll go for it (and since all life is a joke to him that’s a lot). One of my favorite things about Joker is the character’s ability to make you feel horrible for laughing at him. The latest Joker blogs was a shining example of this. If you go look at the boards on that video on their site you see people feeling bad for laughing at Mrs. Arkham when he had a knife to her throat…I mean it’s scary that he laughs at silting someone’s throat, but when you do…it just makes you question your own sanity and morals. I really went into his philosophy of life in the last book of Fools, no one’s seemed to have read it though.
I’ll be sure to read it, now.

Well we all have from one time to another, maybe question your sanity isn’t the right term…but he defiantly makes you think twice on how good/what kind of person you are

Didn’t think of this until now, and it’s more of a shout out than a joke. But Two-Face took Gordon’s family to where Rachel died. The address of the place, two hundred and fifty fifty second street…get it? 200 50/50 2nd. Ah…just like the old gimmicky Two-Face from the golden age comics. In Nolan I trust.
